How To Care For Your Jewellery

Caring for your jewellery is important to ensure it stays looking its best, but different types involve slightly different approaches. We have written a simple guide below on how to care for your jewellery.

Before we get started, we recommend that all jewellery is removed before sleep, swimming, cleaning and exercising to prevent any damage.

Sterling Silver Jewellery Care Guide

How to prevent tarnishing:

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes which makes it appear darker than the bright, sparkly silver colour it is when its just been polished.

Tarnishing happens as a result of the chemical reaction when silver reacts to sulphur in the atmosphere and is exacerbated by exposure to direct sunlight, moisture or high humidity.

Whilst tarnishing affects the appearance of your silver jewellery, it does not cause any damage.

You can reduce tarnishing by keeping your silver jewellery in an airtight container and storing it in a cool, dry and dark place. We suggest adding moisture removing silica gel packets to your jewellery box and using tiered jewellery storage to keep your jewellery from touching each other. You can also use anti-tarnishing bags or anti-tarnishing strips.

Regularly wearing your silver jewellery helps prevent tarnishing in the first place, so wear your pieces as much as you can!

How to clean your silver jewellery:

If your jewellery needs cleaning, we recommend soaking it in warm soapy water for ten minutes and removing dirt and grime with a soft toothbrush or cotton earbud. Be sure to not use anything abrasive that could scratch the metal or any gemstones.

We recommend drying your jewellery with a soft cloth and using an impregnated silver polishing cloth to give it a shine. We don't recommend using harsh pastes or chemicals.

Gold Jewellery Care Guide

All gold jewellery needs to be cleaned but how it will tarnish will depend on the purity of the gold.

24 carat gold is pure gold and will not tarnish over time. However, it is very soft and susceptible to marks.

10 carat and 14 carat gold are mixed with other metals and are more durable, but also more likely to tarnish.

How to clean your gold jewellery:

Gold is quite soft, so please bear this is in mind when cleaning and avoid using abrasive products. Just like with silver jewellery, we recommend using warm soapy water and a cotton earbud or cloth to gently clean any dirt and grime.

When clean, we recommend thoroughly rinsing before drying with a soft cloth and using an impregnated gold cleaning cloth to give it a final shine.

For more stubborn tarnishing you can use a very soft baby's toothbrush.

Pearl and Delicate Jewellery Care Guide

Most delicate jewellery can be cleaned with warm sopay water and a non-abrasive soft brush before being rinsed and dried with a soft cloth.

However, pearl jewellery is best cleaned with a damp cotton cloth. If the pearls have yellowed you can add a small amount of mild soap to lukewarm water, gently clean them and allow them to dry naturally by laying them on a towel. Do not use any harsh chemicals, pastes or a vinegar solution as the acid can damage the surface of the pearl. Do not leave a string of pearls soaking in water for any length of time because this can weaken the silk thread.

However, regularly wearing your pearls exposes them to the oils from our bodies which helps to keep them hydrated and maintain their natural lustre, so it's good to wear them as much as you can!

In summary, do the following:

  1. Store your jewellery in a jewellery box so that each piece is not touching to prevent tarnishing and scratching.
  2. Keep your jewellery box in a cool, dark and dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  3. Invest in an impregnated silver or gold cleaning cloth, or a microfibre cloth.
