FAQs about our materials and craftsmanship

Materials and Craft

How do you make your jewellery?

Our silver and gold designs are handcrafted using the ancient arts of sand casting and lost wax casting, which means that every piece is made from scratch and no two pieces are the same.

We also use a variety of knotting, stringing and wire work techniques to our create pearl and beaded jewellery.

Where is your jewellery made?

All of our jewellery is handmade in South West England. Ellie does every part of the jewellery making herself, except the lost wax casting process which is outsourced to a casting house in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, England. Ellie sand casts every sand cast piece and sets every gemstone.

What is your jewellery made from?

Our silver and gold jewellery is crafted from 100% recycled solid silver and gold - never plated, filled or vermeil. We hallmark our jewellery in alignment with UK hallmarking laws, which you can read about in our ‘Hallmarking Guide’.

We use a combination of natural and lab-grown gemstones, chosen for their colour, durability and beauty.

Is your jewellery sustainable?

Our jewellery is made from recycled sterling silver and gold, which reduces the environmental damage caused by silver and gold mining. Solid silver and gold will not flake like plated or vermeil jewellery, which means you will be able to keep for jewellery for a long time, reducing the likelihood of needing to buy more.

Lab-grown gemstones are an ethical alternative to natural gemstones. As the global gemstone industry is unregulated, it is difficult to trace the origins of natural gemstones, but lab-grown gemstones carry none of these concerns, as well as reducing the mining impact on the earth.

Is your jewellery hypoallergenic?

Yes. Hypoallergenic jewellery refers to jewellery made without metals that are known to cause skin irritation, such as nickel. Our jewellery is made using solid recycled sterling silver and gold alloys which contain no nickel or other metals that commonly cause skin irritation.

Is your jewellery waterproof?

No. 'Waterproof' jewellery usually refers to plated jewellery with a special tarnish resistant coating. Our jewellery does not have a special coating as it is made from solid recycled silver and gold.

We recommend removing your jewellery when swimming or showering if you want to prevent damage and keep it looking its best.

If you're unsure on how to care for your jewellery, check out our care guide.

Are lab-grown gemstones real gemstones?

Yes - lab-grown gemstones are chemically identical to natural gemstones, but typically flawless. They are created without mining, avoiding land destruction, water pollution and the displacement of communities. Furthermore, lab-grown diamonds also eliminate the risk of conflict diamonds and human rights issues associated with certain mining operations.

What is the difference between natural and lab-grown gemstones?

Lab-grown gemstones are chemically identical to natural gemstones, but are made rather than mined. As the gemstone mining industry is unregulated, many people are choosing to buy lab-grown gemstones over natural for ethical and environmental concerns.
