In the UK it is illegal to sell or describe any item as Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium unless it is hallmarked as per the UK Hallmarking Act 1973. 

Articles above the following weights must be hallmarked:

• Silver, 7.78 grams
• Palladium, 1.0 gram
• Gold, 1.0 gram
• Platinum, 1.0 gram
