What is Dreamy Jewellery?

I describe my jewellery style as dreamy, but what does that really mean? In this blog post I break down my design process, my interpretation of the dreamy style aesthetic, and what elements make my jewellery dreamy.

Dreamworld Magic

One of my biggest influences when making jewellery is the mystical, magical dreamworld we only have access to in our sleep.

When I talk about a magical dreamworld I am referring to a liminal space between the land of living and sleep - that feminine, nostalgic, watery realm where feelings are all consuming and anything seems possible. In the dreamworld there are no rules - your imagination if free to run wild and create whatever it wants. I try to apply the same ethos when making jewellery. This results in unusually shaped rings, flower shaped pendants and whimsical hoop earring charms

Fairytales, magic and myth are big influences over my work. My jewellery is girly, dreamy, and whimsical - the designs are colourful and glitzy and look like they could have come from a fairytale. I am especially drawn to mermaids and witches and make repeated references to the sea, nature, moon and stars.

Dreamy Jewellery Shapes

As a self taught jewellery artist I experiment with different shapes and have developed my own jewellery making techniques. Whereas a formally trained jeweller may feel bound by knowing all of the rules, I feel no such restriction. I see designs in my head and then experiment until I make them a reality. This results in jewellery formed around the natural shapes of gemstones rather than from setting stones in traditionally shaped ring bands.

For example, the shapes of my Shades of Cool Ring and Pink Grapefruit Ring are made by following the natural shape of the gemstones, rather than setting gemstones into ring bands. My True Romance Ring is an asymmetrical heart created from ten individual bezel set pink topaz and garnet stones, rather than making a perfectly symmetrical heart shaped ring and setting stones within it. To me, these shapes are more interesting and imaginative - dreamy with a creative, bohemian handmade flair.

My Dreamy Jewellery Colour Palette and Motifs

In my work I like to use a variety of coloured gemstones including soft greens, pinks, purples and blues. However, I also like to use earthier shades of green, orange and red, as well as deep blue and dark purple. I think of these earthier colours as the witchier elements of my jewellery - hence the description of mermaid garden or sea witch jewellery.

Signature elements of my work include these dreamy and earthy tones, rippled textured metal, organic shapes, flower, heart, moon and star motifs, and fun glitzy details. My jewellery incorporates feminine symbols taken from nature and the cosmos to wear as earrings, pendants and rings. I make jewellery to connect women to themselves, their magic and the natural world.

In combination, I like to think all of these elements create jewellery that looks like it’s from a dream - a magical, mermaid garden of bejewelled treasure.
